What should I have at my disposal on a bike ride in case of an accident?

A: Borrowing from an article by Brandon West, these items should be with you for off trail riding:
1. an old bike tube cut in half for broken bones and dislocated joints
2. roll of athletic tape
3. a small sling that can be tied at both ends

For contacting the outside world:

1. a cell phone in easy reach
2. a gps device

Miscellaneous stuff:

1. pocketknife
2. painkillers other than ones that thin the blood
3. ID, insurance information and emergency contact number

Regular 1st aid stuff for open wounds.  This stuff may not be for you but it could help save a life.
